Mathru School for the Differently-Abled
Monday 2/3/14
No real developments so far on persuading Philippine Airlines to be reasonable and humane, but it's only Monday, and yesterday was Super Bowl Sunday (a big distractive deal in the US, of course, but I doubt many in India or the rest of the world care or even know what Super Bowl Sunday is. I sure haven't missed it, in any case.).
But Andy and I did get the word out to some friends who are active on Twitter, and I sent a post to the RPList. A few RPListers had good suggestions, too. So I've sent emails off to the Hong Kong Society for the Blind and the Hong Kong Blind Union, in the hopes they may have some connections with the Philippine Airlines office in Hong Kong. I sent an email to the Philippine Resources for the Blind, too, to let them know what is happening. I am scheduled to meet with them while I'm in Manila (let's all assume I am, in fact, getting to Manila) to discuss the possibility of teaching my mosaic technique there.
And I sent off an email to Christopher Elliott, who, according to a fellow RPLister, "advoca[tes] on this kind of thing all the time, and writes about it."
AND Andy found an email address for the Philippine Airlines office in Hong Kong, so I've sent them an email setting forth my request and special circumstances in writing.
Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, we're wrapping up the MaryD Mathru Mosaic School here. Divya, Akshatha and I had a good time this morning putting the murals of the student mosaics tougher. This was a project that required precision vision, so they did almost all the work, but even I could see how nice the murals look. We ran out of glue so we'll do the coffee table-top tomorrow after we get more. We're using the furniture glue, which is very strong and designed for use on wood, so it should hold the mosaics to the boards just fine.
I'm done teaching, but very pleased to see Akshatha and the other teachers carrying on with the mosaic classes, and doing just fine. My mission to teach the teachers so they can continue with the classes after I leave has evidently been accomplished. I'm writing a "Mary's Mosaic Manual" for Akshatha and the teachers to refer to, and they'll always be able to email me if they have any questions.
I will figure out a way to send them more tools. We weren't able to find any here, so Andy was going to send some with Linda.
Mosaic tools and supplies, chocolates and other goodies to leave here, and some audio-books and AA batteries for me for the trip home. I never did get any shopping done during my Goldfinch break, but as a last resort I should be able to find batteries and audiobooks at the airport. When I Googled "audio-book stores Bangalore" I found one located in the airport. I'll check it out Thursday evening with Mayu when we're at the airport for our flight to Sri Lanka.
Only a couple more days! Andy and I sure would like to get the situation resolved with Philippine Airlines by then.
